How It's Done
After bisque firing, we draw each design on the tile with wax. Then the
tile is hand glazed with colored crackle glazes and fired to 1800
degrees in a kiln. The tile is removed from the kiln while it is still
glowing hot and placed into a container of sawdust. The hot tile
causes the sawdust to ignite. Then the container is covered producing a
smoky carbon rich atmosphere in the container.
The unique crackle pattern in the glazed areas is caused by rapidly
cooling the tile. The unglazed areas are blackened and the crackle
pattern is enhanced by the absorption of carbon - that is
characteristic of Raku.
We personally design, hand form, glaze and fire each tile. We have
attached a wire on the back so the tile is ready to hang.
